Wow what a weekend.

It started Saturday with Capt. Mark nailing a nice big-eye and boating 7 yellowfin mostly on the chunk with an open boat trip. Capt. Deane and Mark have been tearing up the big-eyes including tournament winners and this was just another one for the books. Capt. Phil on the 60 Ritchie with the Joe Miedrich charter on a 2 night trip nailed their own big-eye Sunday morning making 20 for the crew for the year then went marlin hunting and bagged a nice 250 pound blue. The tuna troll bite shut off but that was ok as the Miedrich Charter already had 20+ yellowfin in the boat from the first night of what turned into a double night overnighter so they went tile fishing and caught a few of those.

Meanwhile Capt. Mark had run home with his open boat trip and turned right around with the John Dale charter getting back out to the Hudson around 6pm. He picked a yellowfin but had his sights set on his 19th big-eye of the year and got what he wanted at 9pm boating a nice one in the dark. The night bite Sunday night saw the 60 Ritchie fishing only 1 tuna rod and 3 swords rods and releasing 8 more yellowfin for a total of 30 for the trip before the sword rod went down and a nice 150 pound sword hit the deck at midnight and they decide to head home with 30 yellowfin, the sword, the big-eye and the blue marlin!!!

Capt. Mark had a great night Sunday night with 16 yellowfin caught and/or released. Of course even with the wind starting to blow Monday morning he had his sights set on big-eye number 20 for him and got it when the long rigger went down and the Joe Shute/Bally combo disappeared inside another eye-ball. A short fight later and Dean stuck the dart and it was game over – 20 for the year for the 48 Canyon Runner and Capt Mark and Dean team and 22 overall.

Looks like Thursday-Friday and Friday-Saturday might get us out again – let’s hope no wind and just swells and the fishing stays just like it is.

We have Sunday-Monday on the 60 Ritchie if anyone is interested – 732-272-4445

Just a quick report for the last week. Finishing isn’t exactly red hot but we seem to keep running over a couple big-eyes. We fished most of last week and while some trips had 6-8 yellowfin many only had 1-3. It seems we are catching as many big-eyes as yellowfin on these trips. I might have lost count but I think we are up to 14 or 15 big-eyes so far this year with all but one caught on the 48 Canyon Runner by Capt. Mark and Dean.

On Monday, Capt. Mark on the 48 Viking had a nice big-eye trolling the Hudson Canyon and he followed that up Thursday with another from the same canyon. One big-eye took a Joe Shute and ballyhoo and the other took a Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bar.

Other boats had some great catches on the chunk with yellowfin Friday night and we are hoping that will signal the beginning of the chunking season. But Monday night was slow for us again in the Hudson so we ran in and finished off with some bluefin – so who knows.

Last but not least – we had a good start to the White Marlin Open Tuesday but it’s a long tournament so nothing to write home about yet.

We have one trip open next week if anyone is interested – it’s on the 60 Ritchie for August 13-14 – since it’s last minute we are offering a decent discount – normal price is $4995 – call to discuss – 732-272-4445.

Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeBlasio of the Canyon Runner were back offshore Sunday to Monday and we very happy to be headed to the general vacinity of the Hudson Canyon as we saw some good water moving in there in the one and only SAT shot we got.

They had lines in by 1pm and the afternoon troll saw a nice pick of very nice size yellowfin. The night bite saw a couple more for Capt. DeBlasio but not much more. Up on the troll in the morning again saw a nice pick of fish. What was so nice was the fish bite all day so it wasn’t like we had to wait for just a short shot at them. Capt. Phil finished up with 14 for 25 or so all on the troll and Capt Mark was 11 for about 25 with a couple on the chunk and released a white. We can’t explain the reason for so many fish being lost – just one of those days where there were a ton of short bites and pulled hooks quickly into the fight. The action was in 600 feet of water and ballyhoo were the ticket on this trip with Canyon Runner squid spreader bars a close second.

Looks like we again might be stuck at the dock for a while with bad weather but hope to get out sometime soon. We are booked up everyday now for a full boat trip until the last week of August but do have a single spot on August 2-3, 7-8, 15-16 and 17-18 if anyone is interest – 732-272-4445.

The boys never sent me pictures but I hope to get some today and will post.

A long week of fishing saw both boats get in 3 overnighters each and saw them fish from the Hudson Canyon down to the Poormans Canyon and every single canyon inbetween. A few trips were dead – with bluefin saving the day and a few trips saw us scratch out 5-6 yellowfin and a white here and there so a decent catch but not what we strive for. Our last trip however this Monday to Tuesday July 16-17 saw our 48 Viking find solid fishing very close to home – finally.

Capt. Mark and Capt Dean had an open boat trip on the 48 Canyon Runner and ran close to home – finally fishing within 85 miles of the inlet for the first time in 25 overnighter – thank you!!!!! First though, on the way out we stopped for some bluefin and got a few bites in an hour bringing 2 to the boat. We then ran offshore and well the water looked horrible and we figured we were going to strike out again. Then they saw some life and hung in for a while and finally got a bite – an hour later another bite – so with nothing else promising to run to we hung in and picked away. We were up to 5 nice 40-60 pound yellowfin and were about to put it on the drift for the night when we got covered up and went 7 for 8. Up on the troll in the morning a few more died on the gaff and we finished up offshore with 15 yellowfin all 40-60 pounds and in addition went 1 for 2 on white marlin.

The tuna are all over the Canyon Runner Rainbow Green Machine bars and Ballyhoo with Joe Shutes – we just got in a bunch of the Joe Shutes that work for us if you want to pick up some for yourself.

Folks – we have very few dates left until September now on either boat so if you want to get in on what is the best early season we ever had please call now. We have 1 spot open next week on the 48 and 1 spot the following week and that’s it between the 2 boats – so call 732-272-4445 or email me at adam@canyonrunner.com if interested.

Canyon Runner 48 – 7/5-6 – 1 More Big-Eye for the week – 9 Yellowfin

Fishing with the Bill Nye charter saw a streak of big-eyes on three trips in a row for Capt. Mark DeBlasio and Capt. Dean Lambros. Arriving at the Wilmington late they trolled into the dark and at 9:30pm hooked and landed a 140 pound big-eye. Setting up for the night bite they were able to pick away and finished up with 9 yellowfin.

Canyon Runner 60 Ritchie – 8 Yellowfin 7/5-6

Capt. Phil Dulanie had the 60 Ritchie Howell out on Thursday with the John Schoen charter and scratched and clawed his way to a pick of yellowfin on the troll and a pick at night on the chunk. He worked the entire Wilmington Canyon and found the yellowfin in the shallows around 400-300 feet.

We have 2 spots open on the 48 Viking this Tuesday/Wednesday if anyone is interested. Normal cost is $725/person but I’ll knock $100 off that as we had a last minute cancellation and we want to fill the spot – please call 732-272-4445 or eamil me at adam@canyonrunner.com

Well – don’t really know what to say on this one – we were just about ready to call off a few trips as the water seems to be drying up to the south when it all changed.

1 hour from pulling in the lines with only 1 yellowfin to show for it Capt. Mark DeBlasio read the right ones down deep and a few seconds later they were in the flat lines. 3 rods went off and 1 hour later 3 big-eyes lay on the deck of the 48 Canyon Runner.

They hit a Canyon Runner Rainbow Green Machine bar, a ballyhoo behind a Joe Shute and a Jet. 2 weighed in right at 200 pounds on the button and small one was about 190 (didn’t weigh it as we need to get back out there.)

Fishing was of course down in the warm water we’ve been fishing for the last few weeks and the bite came at 8am in 900 feet of water. The Anthony Bencivenga charter from Marlboro were on the rods. These are the 8th big-eyes Anthony has caught in the last 3 years on 4 seperate charters – time for him to do the MA500.

Capt. Mark left Sunday on an open boat trip early morning after spending a week at the dock with all the east wind and headed down to the Lindy. No water in the Lindy so they ran to the Spencer and put em in. They boated a couple fish there, a fish on the way south and a few fish in the Wilmington. The conditions and signs were not great and the water seemed to be moving south but they still scratched out 7 nice yellowfin on Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bars and Green Machine Spreader bars and ballyhoo. With nicer weather inshore once it got dark they ran into the fingers to shark – they caught nothing on the shark ground.

Canyon Runner 6/7-8 – 21 Yellowfin in 4 Hours
Captain Mark and Dean took the 48 Canyon Runner with the Mario Carbone charter back to the Lindenchol on Thursday. They got up on the troll at 1pm and by 5pm they were done. 21 yellowfin came to the boat that ate mostly Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bars. They had over 30 fish one and the charter had enough. They wrapped things up and took a drift in the deep but by 9pm with nothing they picked up and ran to the Chicken Canyon and proceeded to nail a 180 pound mako.

Canyon Runner 6/8-9 – 6 Yellowfin 3 Bluefin
Doing their 3rd overnighter in a row Capt. Mark and Capt. Dean had an open boat trip out on Friday to Saturday and had to fight the crowd. As always the crowd hurt the stellar fishing we had and we made a decision to try and look at other smaller canyons up the line from the Lindy. That did not pan out as well. They picked fish the entire trip but 9 tuna was a far cry from the 43 they caught in the prior 30 hours.
